CULJP 2024 Call for Nominations

2024 Best Undergraduate Student Paper Award in Interdisciplinary Legal Studies
Recognition for Research and Writing Accomplishments of Undergraduate Students

Nomination deadline: April 1, 2024

CULJP invites submissions for the 2024 undergraduate student paper award in interdisciplinary legal studies. We are opening up this award to include various formats of scholarly projects – including podcasts, websites, video/film or multimedia projects – that demonstrate critical thought, original contributions, and scholarly analysis. We ask students to provide a brief critical discussion of the scholarly contribution of the project, if appropriate. Projects should have been completed while the nominee was an undergraduate student at a CULJP member institution, within the last 12 months (between April 1, 2023 and April 1, 2024). Projects may be based on primary research, secondary research, archival/historical research, or theoretical approaches and may use any appropriate social research methods (qualitative, quantitative, historical, etc.). Original scholarly literature reviews are also eligible.
Nominations of undergraduate projects can be made only by faculty or graduate student mentors/instructors at CULJP member institutions; no self-nominations from undergraduate students are accepted. The student winner will receive a cash award of $100. The nominating mentor will also receive a $100 cash award for mentoring; the CULJP expects that the mentor will continue to advise the student through the publication process. An honorable mention may also be awarded. Send all nominations to our award committee members: John McMahon ([email protected]) and Julius Haag ([email protected]) by 5:00 pm EST on April 1, 2024.

Nomination guidelines:
  • No mentor may nominate more than two student projects in the same year for the award.
  • Only one (1) single-authored work by the same author in a given year will be accepted. Two works by the same author will be accepted if one or both works are jointly authored (both authors must be undergraduate students at a CULJP member institution).
  • In submitting the project for award consideration, the mentor must include the date and title of the course (or other activity) for which the paper was written.
  • Submissions must be in English; translations from other languages into English are welcome.
  • Paper submissions must be double-spaced; may not exceed 18,000 words in length, including notes and references; and must be in 12-point font.
  • The mentor must include a letter of support describing the merits of the student project submitted, as well as contact information for the student, including their current status.
  • Mentors do not need the authorization of the student(s) to submit a nomination.  However, nominations can be withdrawn at the mentor’s or student’s request.
  • All supporting documents must be submitted in .pdf format.
